Four Easy Pieces

So last night was spent doing Main Scenario and sidequests trying to hit LV46 for Garuda. Followed the storyline as far as the Howling Eye, then caught up on some LV45-46 sidequests that I had finished at LV42-43. Hit some FATEs and unlocked a couple of Levemetes along the way, but still didn’t make LV46.

Took a short break, and came back to get some Artifact armor I thought. Now the first three pieces were as easy as cake, I had some trouble with the last one by the Salt Strand. Had to kite the Mamool Ja around for a while waiting for HP to restore, why I didn’t summon Quetzalcoatl (my Chocobo) I don’t really know. Anyway, I didn’t fail and can now sport four out of five pieces of Artifact. Body is LV50 so will have to wait for a while. I was pretty close to LV46 after this but stopped there.

9 fish to go

During the weekend I spent a lot of time tracking down those ever elusive Legendary fish, and others missing from my Fishing Log. Some are dependant on weather and I have yet to see fog in the East Shroud when there to catch a Mushroom Crab. Raizt tipped me off about thunderstorms in South Shroud after I spent an hour and a half waiting for the weather to turn there. But I got my Judgment Staff all the same.

On Sunday, I kept doing this for a while, then I had to hit LV43 Monk for Stone Vigil. Went after the mobs in my Hunting Log, and hit a few FATES. During all this I finished off some LV44-45 quests, so just have to hit those levels to collect.

Stone Vigil was less difficult with a capped team, first attempt we went in under the cap – 43 PLD (capped), 42 LNC, 41 WHM and 41 MNK – and it was a struggle against time. We only got a few attempts on Isgebind. This time we had some experience, and a bit more bite in the punch. We had no problems with first boss, and though we had some bad luck with tornados during second boss, we managed to pull through. Isgebind did put up a fight, but we cleared him with minutes to spare.

We continued on the Main Scenario line and finally reached the Umbral Isles. By this time I was 3/4 of the way to LV44, and I had huge difficulties finishing the Siren instance. After dying twice, I decided to finish the sidequests on the island, among with some convenient FATEs appearing for me to hit LV44. Then I switched to Fisher.

The last three holes were on that island, and I have now unlocked all of them. So I though, while I’m here I might try to catch some fish elsewhere unavailable. Up came the Pike Eel, Mummer Wrasse, Coelacanth, Sunfish. Giant Squid and Megalodon both caught at first chance. So not only did I discover those holes, I also effectively completed them in the same session. Granted it was only six fish, but I had expected to struggle with the Legendaries.

Back to Monk and that blasted Siren. LV44 proved to be enough (cap is LV46) to clear the instance. I also used a defensive stance and some food. The evening ended in the East Shroud, I’m supposed to kill a Golem when I pick up the thread again.

Fisher LV50

I had set a few goals this weekend of which Fisher 50 was the most important. Other goals included unlocking Monk (done!), hitting LV15 Lancer (done, obviously, since it’s needed to unlock Monk) and clearing Haukke Manor (done!) with Athi, Aub and Raizt.

With Fisher at 50 I can focus on other activities such as Mining and getting other jobs to LV15. Archer and Marauder needs to hit LV25 as well, for sub abilities.

Another thing that had a first was Radiozo, I clearly missed a few opportunities to make some gil by not researching the Market Board. But he has made me a decent amount of gil over the weekend, and fishing is a viable steady income.

Fish on!

In the immortal words of the Primus song from “Sailing the Seas of Cheese”, Fish On! Mixing exploration with fishing equal doing two of my favorite in-game things. I have managed to map most of the world now, and unlocked most of the fishing holes. Although unsubstantiated my theory is that the remaining fishing holes require Gulleye III. Having LV38+ (LV43 as of this post) Fisher allows me to move about virtually everywhere, and I have found no LV50+ mobs in the wild. Saw my first LV50 yesterday but it was probably connected to some form of Duty.

My fishing expeditions were put on halt, but was grinding one particular fishing hole (North Silvertear) yesterday waiting for Swede, and managed to get almost 400k experience in little over an hour. To get a basic statistic for the bait I was using, I did 100 casts resulting in 88 caught fish and 12 that swam away. I also note weight, experience and quality for each of the 88 fish caught, giving me a catchrate, albeit rudimentary. The plan is to perform these expeditions once I hit LV50 and put on some decent gear. Need to work towards the Luminary Rod anyway.

Retainer unlocked!

Working my way through the Main Scenario with Auberjeen, Athilorian, Raizt, Swede and Grifftron we have finally managed to unlock our Retainers. Now we’re aiming for Ifrit during this week.

During the weekend we also formed a Free Company – The Usual Suspects. Still working on a crest, first draft is black/yellow in keeping with Twin Adder colors. Our charge is a gold Wyrm.

Meanwhile, Aalea has caught a truckload of fish and ended up at LV36. I have a strange feeling that Fisher will be my first LV50.

Airship and Fisher unlocked

Swede and I have been working our way through the Main Scenario quest line and finally got our airship access last night. After cutscene we ended up exactly where we wanted to go, Limsa Lominsa. Headed straight for the Fisherman’s Guild, and unlocked Fisher – even though I was already LV20. Took the first two class trials on in 10 minutes time. Next one requires me to stretch my legs a bit. Tonight we’re heading for Gridania to unlock the last few jobs. After that we can go back to work on the Main Scenarios.
